THIS MOTOR CAR:

The E21’s crisp, clean lines, driver-oriented ‘cockpit’ interior and high standards of engineering and build quality were much admired in period, and continue to be today. The ‘open’ versions of the E21 chassis manufactured by BMW were limited to a factory fitted sunroof, however a cabriolet body style, such as this one – manufactured by Karosserie Baur GmbH in Stuttgart, Germany, was produced in limited numbers. Baur was founded in 1910 and has built cabriolets since 1927. They have partnered with BMW and have built convertibles together since 1937.

Based on this cooperation, Baur was granted permission to build E21 convertibles called Baur TC-1, based on the regular E21 models. BMW then offered to sell the cars through their dealership network and to maintain official BMW warranty. The construction of a roof framework, a rear soft top and a targa roof was designed in close harmony, ensuring build quality and exceptional rigidity. Total units produced: 4,595.

The Baur was both well designed and well-engineered, its cabriolet design with central T-bar roof offering good rollover protection whilst delivering that all-important wind-in-the-hair experience. Appreciation for these coach-built BMWs has increased significantly in recent years and the Baurs have now become both desirable and collectible.

This original Hong Kong delivered example is ready to enter a new stable. It has 10 previous registered owners, and showing 54,960 miles on the odometer. The car has spent the last couple of years sitting and waiting for the commencement of a full restoration project that never came to be.

Available for viewing by appointment for serious interest only.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • A special collaboration with BMW, only 4,595 units ever produced

  • A rare Hong Kong dealer delivered car

  • A good candidate for a full restoration project

Classic Insider condition score: 70 points out of 100

CONDITION REPORT:

Modified Original. The exterior paint and trims has visible blemishes and wear, inline with the age. The alloy wheels are in good shape (the center caps are in the trunk) but the tires must be replaced soon. The Interior shows aging but period correct, the seats, dash, carpets and door cards are in condition that is inline with its age but due for a full deep cleansing. We have been told it was once owned by an expat racing mechanic who has tuned it up, gave it great handling and upgraded it with many parts from Hartge (Famous BMW Tuner in the 80s and 90s) and Alpina. Sadly, the car has been a bit neglected for a while at this point but mechanically it is in a working condition at time of photography. Due to its rarity and being an original Hong Kong car, it is a good candidate for a project car to revive its former glory.
