The 230 SL Mercedes is one of the longer lived Mercedes-Benz models, lasting in production from 1963 through to 1971 and selling almost 50,000 units. Introduced to replace the legendary 300SL cars, the immortal "Gullwing", the car had a lot to live up to, but live up to it it did! Delivering effortlessly cool looks coupled to a gutsy performance driven by the creamy smooth six cylinder engines the cars never failed to deliver in terms of refinement and appearance.
Known in Mercedes-Benz circles as the W113, this version of the SL (Literally Sports Lightweight) was developed under the auspices of Mercedes-Benz Technical Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling Friedrich Geiger. The lead designers were Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, who created its distinctive, patented, slightly concave hardtop, which inspired the "Pagoda" nickname.
All models were equipped with a six cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection. The bonnet, boot lid, door skins and tonneau cover were made of aluminum to reduce weight. The comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful brakes gave the W113 superb handling for its time. The styling of the front, with its characteristic upright Bosch "fishbowl" headlights and simple chrome grille, dominated by the large three-pointed star in the nose panel, paid homage to the then already legendary 300 SL roadster and coupe. Even with the 2.3 L motor, it is a popular and successful representative of the pagoda series and easily achieves very good travel speeds. With this vehicle, you can move safely and comfortably in today’s traffic without stress. The solid, rigid construction, the proven, durable technology, the appropriate performance, its comfortable and safe road holding, the excellent spare parts supply and its well-known workshop friendliness can delight a future owner for many decades to come. In this condition, driving for pleasure and appreciation are inevitable.
Classic and timeless styling coupled with the panache of the 1960s and this was a car favoured by the original "Jet Set". The car we represent is an original and fair quality driver 230SL. Drivable and enjoyable for regular use, and an advantage to have an automatic as these are cruisers as opposed to sports cars. The car starts easily and idles smoothly. Regularly used throughout this ownership and with driving manners that is very good, as expected for a nice solid car.
